“Barrier Free” In Law Suite – Government Road Area of Burnaby BC
This 900 square foot in-law suite addition was designed and built by Tamlin Homes. The City of Burnaby is helping to promote two generation family homes by allowing in-law suites which have their own kitchen, bathroom and living quarters. The building must be attached to the main house so there are design considerations and bylaws which must be conformed to.
Architecturally, the objective of the in-law suite addition was to maintain a completely seamless extension to the main house, while providing for an independent life style. As a barrier free design, all doorways are at least 36” wide and the unit is accessible by way of a ramped walkway to the entryway (ie. there are no steps to deal with). Rather than having a towering building in the backyard, this addition was sunken to match the existing basement level. However, to allow a bright and open atmosphere a low level rock garden with huge walk-out patio surrounds the unit.
On the outside the building features Douglas Fir timber trusses and western red cedar sidewall shingles and low-maintenance stucco. The wrap around 10 foot high patio doors and window transoms, connect effortlessly to the expansive 260 square foot deck and 600 square foot garden, all visible from the great room. The future water fall feature will make this a natural paradise!
On the inside all the main rooms (kitchen, dining, living and bedroom) are vaulted 15 foot high Douglas Fir ceilings with timber frame trusses. The heated concreted floor is softened by the utilization of cork flooring and carpeted areas. The natural wood features offer warm ambiance, with a contemporary feel provided by the refined tile and stone counter tops in the kitchen. The over-sized bathroom shower unit was designed with an extra low curb and easy access shower for future wheelchair access.
