When the owner of this home started discussing adding a registered in-law suite to his home he wanted to make it an addition to the home rather than a renovation to the basement to make a basement suite. He wanted his parents to have the feel of living in a home, maintaining their independence but still being close by. A few on-site consultations were a must to get a feel for what could be done to create this barrier free addition.

Architecturally, the objective was to maintain a completely seamless extension to the main house. To achieve this flow, rather than having a towering building in the backyard, Tamlin created a design that would allow the addition to be sunk to match the existing home’s basement level. The renovation of the main house’s master bedroom and addition of a rooftop deck was a necessary element to achieving that flow.

The building is accessible by way of a ramped walkway to the entryway so there are no stairs to deal with. The exterior of the building features douglas fir timber trusses, western red cedar sidewall shingles and low-maintenance stucco. To allow a bright and open atmosphere a low level, private rock garden with a huge walk out patio surround the addition. The wrap around 10 foot high patio doors and window transoms connect effortlessly to this expansive 260 square foot patio and 600 square foot garden, all visible from the great room.

The interior of the home features 15 foot high vaulted ceilings throughout the entire home. With our spectacular douglas fir timber frame trusses throughout. The heated concrete floor is softened by the utilization of cork flooring and carpeted areas. The natural wood features offer warm ambiance, with a contemporary feel provided by the refined tile and stone counter tops in the kitchen. The over-sized bathroom shower was designed with an extra low curb and easy accessibility for future wheelchair access. As a barrier free design all the doorways are at least 36 inches wide.

This in-law suite was meticulously designed and built by Tamlin and will allow for many years of enjoyment.
